November 2017
Dear Friend of Bronxville Scouting,
Your generous support of the Bronxville Scout Committee has made possible a busy year of maintenance and improvements on our wonderful Scout Cabin!
But before I go into details, let me tell you about all of the great Scouting activities going on in our cabin these days.
Our Otis Tiffany Barnes Scout Cabin is the home to Bronxville Boy Scout Troops 1, 2, and 4, as well as Cub Scout Packs 5 and 353. Literally hundreds of boys and young men participate in Scouting under our roof.
Aside from Bronxville and Eastchester, our cabin’s Units enable boys from Yonkers and Mount Vernon, and from towns as far away as Larchmont and Mamaroneck, to participate in and benefit from Scouting.
Now more than ever in this crazy world – ruled by technology, riven by uncertainty, and challenged with social upheaval – do we need the time-honored values of Scouting.
And thanks to loyal donors like you, we have a local, safe home – our Scout Cabin – where we can continue to teach these values to the new generations of youngsters.
Year in and year out, our Tiger Cubs move on to Cub Scouts, our Webelos move on to Boy Scouts, and some of our Boy Scouts even become Eagle Scouts. Our Scout Cabin has an impressive record in this regard.
And all of our Scouts move on to become good, upstanding citizens, who understand the importance of values, and of service to the community.
Which leads me back to our Scout Cabin, always a work in progress. Its maintenance needs never end, and we’ve got a long list of needed capital improvements.
Thanks to your generous support, in the past year we’ve replaced the kitchen stove, replaced the entire sewer lines from both bathrooms, and fixed the parking lot drainage problems with the proper repairs and upgrades. (So no longer will our parking lot be a hazardous, frozen skating rink in the winter!). We’ve added a bollard to protect our front door, and did you notice the lovely garden of natural plantings that our volunteers and scouts added to the front left of the cabin, surrounded by railroad ties?
And we’ve got important capital improvements on our list for this year. We’ll be replacing the windows with new, more insulating ones that will make our Cabin more energy efficient and save us money in the long run. We’ll be reconstructing the building’s deteriorated rear wall, and for safety and security reasons, we’ll be enclosing our outdoor fuel tank.
All of this costs money, and for this, I again humbly turn to you and ask for your generosity.
Our annual support comes only from dues, and donations from loyal benefactors like you, which enable us to maintain and improve the cabin for scouting. (And when Scouts aren’t using the Cabin, we make it available to the community for rentals at a reasonable fee).
Please consider a donation to us so that we can continue the important work of Scouting.
On behalf of the hundreds of Scouts and adult leaders who serve in our Cabin, I humbly thank you for your support. We could not accomplish our important work without you.
May God Bless America, and may God Bless our scouts.
Yours truly,
Dr. Howard Rakov
President, Bronxville Scout Committee
P.S. For those who remember Bill Sanford, a Silver Beaver Award recipient, and Ron Bucca, a Fire Marshall, Green Beret, and Scout Dad who died saving others during the 9/11 terrorist attack, we continue to accept donations in their memories.
